Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
Southwest Florida International Airport (IATA: RSW) is located approximately 16 kilometers southeast of Fort Myers. It serves Southwest Florida, Cape Coral-Fortress Myers, Naples-Marco Island, and Punta Gorda.
RSW was first considered in 1973 when it became evident that the current air terminal in Page Field could handle increasing future demand for commercial flights into the region.
The public authority of Lee District chose a site close to Interstate 75, which was under development at that point. Construction began in 1980, and Southwest Florida Regional Airport opened in 1983.
The air terminal was renamed Southwest Florida International Airport in 1993, even though it had facilitated worldwide trips starting around 1984 and U.S. Customs beginning around 1987 for services to Germany.
Since then, the airport has hosted bigger planes such as the Boeing 747s (notably, the U.S. President's Air Force One).
When the first terminal was working at over two times its expected capacity, it was time to develop another Midfield Terminal Complex airport. Construction began in February 2002 and opened to the public in 2005.
Today, the airport has one terminal with three concourses, B, C, and D. The concourses are entirely separate and not connected to the airside. Concourses A and E have been reserved for the planned future expansion of the terminal.
Its busiest domestic routes in 2021 include Chicago–O'Hare, Illinois, Atlanta, Georgia, Detroit, Michigan, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, Charlotte, North Carolina, Newark, New Jersey, Boston, Massachusetts, Chicago–Midway, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas.
The airport sits 9 meters above sea level on 5,486 hectares of land at 26°32′10″N and 081°45′19″W.
