Trains to and from Portland International Airport (PDX)

The Portland International Airport is in the NE of downtown and is conveniently connected to the city center via the MAX light-rail train.

MAX Red Line Light Rail

The Light Rail can be found on the main level, at the south end of the ticket lobby.

The MAX Light Rail Red Line is the easiest way to travel to and from the airport, taking under 40 minutes.

The train departs every 15 minutes.

Fares

  • Adult (ages 18–64): $2.50 for 2.5 hours of riding; $5 for a day pass
  • Honored Citizen (65 and older; low income, Medicare, or disability): $1.25 for a 2.5-hour ride; $2.50 for a day pass
  • Youth (ages 7–17): $1.25 for 2.5 hours of riding; $2.50 for a day pass

MAX Lines

All of MAX's five lines run through downtown Portland. Each of the five lines that spread from the city center covers a different section of the city:

  • The Blue Line (Hillsboro/City Center/Gresham)
  • The Green Line (Clackamas/City Center)
  • The Red Line (Portland International Airport/Beaverton)
  • The Yellow Line (Expo Center/City Center)
  • The Orange Line (Milwaukie/City Center)

Service is less frequent in the early morning, midday, and evening. Most lines begin service around 4 a.m. and finish before midnight.

The MAX Red Line

The MAX Red Line is a light rail service in Portland, Oregon, United States, operated by TriMet as part of the MAX Light Rail system.

It serves 26 stations from central Beaverton through Portland City Center and Northeast Portland to Portland International Airport.

From Beaverton Transit Center to Gateway/Northeast 99th Avenue Transit Center, the Red Line interlines with the Blue Line and partially with the Green Line; it then branches for a 5.5-mile (8.9 km) segment to Portland International Airport station.

The Red Line interlines with the Blue and Green lines along with the Eastside and Westside MAX segments; it shares 22 stations, from Beaverton Transit Center to Gateway Transit Center, with the Blue Line, of which eight stations, from Rose Quarter Transit Center to Gateway Transit Center, are additionally shared with the Green Line.

Transfers to the Green (beyond the interline segment), Orange, and Yellow lines, via the Pioneer Courthouse and Pioneer Place stations along the Portland Transit Mall, can be made by detraining at the Pioneer Square stations.

Another transfer to the Yellow Line via Interstate/Rose Quarter station can be made at the Rose Quarter Transit Center.

The Red Line also provides connections to local and intercity bus services across the line, the Portland Streetcar at four stops within Portland's Central City, and WES Commuter Rail at Beaverton Transit Center.

A Better Red will extend Red Line service to Fair Complex/Hillsboro Airport station in 2024 using the existing Westside MAX alignment and construct an infill station north of Gateway Transit Center called "Gateway North."

  • Signs at each station indicate when the MAX is coming and which lines are due.
  • The bar is illuminated on the front of each train, so you’ll never get confused about which train to board.

Portland Union Station (Amtrak)

Another option is Amtrak in Portland.

One of the easiest ways to travel to and from Union Station to PDX is by using the MAX light rail. If going from the airport, simply take the Red Line to any stop between

You can get off at Gateway and Rose Garden, where you can get on and transfer to the Green Line. The Green Line will take you the rest of the way.

To get from Union Station to PDX, take this same trip in reverse, going from the Green Line to the Red Line.

Portland Union Station is a train station in Portland, Oregon, United States, situated near the western shore of the Willamette River in Old Town Chinatown.

It serves as an intermediate stop for Amtrak's Cascades and Coast Starlight routes and, along with King Street Station in Seattle, is one of two western termini of the Empire Builder.

Arriving by bus service

The Bus, Central Oregon Breeze, Flixbus, Greyhound Lines, POINT, Shuttle Oregon, TriMet, The Wave

The station is a major transport hub for the Portland metropolitan area, with connections to MAX Light Rail, the Portland Streetcar, and local and intercity bus services.

The station building contains Wilf's Restaurant & Bar on the ground level and offices on the upper floors. It also has Amtrak's first Metropolitan Lounge on the West Coast, which is reserved for first-class sleeping cars and business-class passengers.

Southeast of the station, the tracks make a sharp turn and cross the river on the historic Steel Bridge.

To the northwest, they follow the river, passing through rail yards before crossing the river again on the Burlington Northern Railroad Bridge.

The station is owned by the city of Portland and operated by Prosper Portland, the city's urban renewal agency.

The city earns $200,000 a year from nearly 30 tenants. Amtrak, the primary tenant, has a continuing lease through 2021.
