Portland International Airport (PDX)

Portland International Airport (IATA: PDX) is the largest airport in the U.S. state of Oregon and a combination civil-military airport.

It is located directly south of the Columbia River in Multnomah County, approximately 15 kilometers northeast of downtown Portland.

PDX is the commonly used IATA airport code for Portland International Airport and it spans a land area of 3,000 acres.

Swan Island Municipal Airport, located northwest of downtown Portland along the Willamette River, was the city's first airport (1927 to 1940) and the floodplain of the Columbia River since 1940.

The second site has seen repeated adjustments of runways and expansions and upgrades of terminal facilities.

In 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew into the new airstrip and dedicated it. In 1935, the Port of Portland realized that the airport was becoming obsolete.

The little airstrip could not be enlarged easily, nor could it accommodate the heavier aircraft and passenger loads anticipated to become prevalent in Portland.

Plans were promptly formulated to move the obsolete airstrip to a new location, the site of PDX.

It offers travelers a one-of-a-kind environment with amenities and services of the highest caliber.

Since the 1960s, the PDX has had direct flights to Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Korea, Germany, Iceland, and, beginning in 2017, the United Kingdom.

The Port of Portland and several airlines at PDX agreed in the second half of 2016 to ensure fair usage of the terminal and concourses at Portland International Airport.

The last project provided six more gates and a 750-foot (230-meter) extension to Concourse E. Southwest Airlines shifted its operations from Concourse C to the newly expanded Concourse E alongside United Airlines following the completion of the project.

Concourses B and C are now primarily utilized by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue Airways, following the move of Southwest Airlines to Concourse E. This project's construction began in the spring of 2017 and was completed on July 15, 2020.

In November of 2019, Concourse A was razed. It was replaced with a larger Concourse B. Four jet bridges, six ground loading zones, and enhanced concession booths were included in the expansion.

All Concourse A operations were temporarily relocated to Concourse C until the expansion of Concourse B was completed.

In March 2020, the primary terminal commenced a five-year extension to provide greater open space in the pre-security area and a 150-foot expansion to the west.

To make place for the construction, the Concourse Connector was closed in January 2021, followed by the Clocktower Plaza three months later. During construction, passengers will use the remnants of the concourse link to avoid the construction zone and access Concourses C and D.

The new primary terminal is anticipated to be finished by 2025.

Travelers rated it the best airport in the United States from 2013 to 2019. In 2020, it came second to Indianapolis International Airport.

Portland International Airport is located northeast of the city center, 15 kilometers away.
