Getting to and from New York La Guardia Airport (LGA)
LaGuardia is a large airport in the United States of America, handling around 23 million passengers per annum. The airport is distinguished from others by its unique IATA code of LGA, and is located in the city of New York. It is well equipped with a range of facilities for its passengers, and also offers a few convenient forms of ground transportation. The airport directions are quite simple to follow for passengers who are travelling in private vehicles, as there is really only one main road past the airport. On three sides the airport is surrounded by water.
The airport of LGA is found in the state of New Jersey, and in New York City. It is one of three main airports in New York, the other two being JFK International Airport and the Newark Liberty International Airport. LaGuardia is the smaller of the three, but together, these airports handle over 100 million passengers per annum, and are considered as the second-largest airport system in the world (and largest in the United States). The airport is located in the northern part of the New York City borough of Queens, and on the waterfront of Flushing Bay and Bowery Bay. It is also nearby to the neighbourhoods of East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Astoria, Woodside and North Corona, and the Flushing Meadows Corona Park is just to the southeast of the airport grounds. New York City consists of five boroughs, which are Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, the Bronx and Brooklyn. The state of New Jersey is found to the western side of the United States, just south of the states New York and Connecticut. New Jersey is north of Delaware and west of Maryland and Pennsylvania. Philadelphia is a large city nearby New York.
LaGuardia Airport’s main access road is Grand Central Parkway. This road links to many other main roads in the nearby vicinity, such as the Interstate 278, Interstate 678 and Astoria Boulevard. A few other roads nearby the airport include Junction Boulevard, 31st Avenue, Hazen Street and 94th Street.
Directions from Midtown Manhattan
From the Central Park area of Manhattan motorists can travel east on Route 25 and continue onto Queens Boulevard. Take the turn-off onto the Interstate 278 in a northerly direction and continue until reaching the Grand Central Parkway, which is the airport’s access road. Follow the signs that indicate the direction to the terminal buildings and airport parking areas. The roads within the airport complex are referred to as Central Terminal Drive and LaGuardia Road. There is also the LaGuardia Access Road off 94th Street. Two other roads that lead to the Interstate 278 from Manhattan are the Williamsburg Bridge and the Queens Midtown Expressway.
Directions from Queens
From Queens motorists will need to access the Grand Central Parkway, which is possible from roads such as the Utopia Parkway. Continue on Grand Central Parkway in a westerly direction, passing the Flushing Meadows Corona Park and Willets Point. Take Exit 5 that is marked for Astoria Boulevard/82nd Street towards the Marine Air Terminal. Turn right into Ditmars Boulevard, take the 1st right onto Marine Terminal Road and then turn right onto Runway Drive. Continue onto LaGuardia Road and follow the signs to your terminal or parking area.
Direction from the Bronx
From the Bronx it will take about twenty minutes to half an hour to reach the airport, and the best route to follow is the Interstate 895, which is accessed from 177th Street. Take the exit for the Interstate 278 and at Port Morris, turn right into 138th Street. Take the third left onto St Anns Avenue and then the third cross street onto 134th Street. Continue onto the Interstate 278 again past Randalls Island and over the Triboro Bridge. Continue onto Grand Central Parkway and take Exit 7 towards LaGuardia Airport.
Directions from Brooklyn
From Brooklyn, take Prospect Freeway off Church Avenue and take the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (Interstate 278) in a northerly direction. Continue to Grand Central Parkway and follow the signs to the airport.
Directions from Staten Island
Motorists coming from the area of Staten Island will need to drive north on the Interstate 278, which is referred to at this point as the Staten Island Expressway. Pass Fort Wadsworth and go over the Verrazano Bridge. At Carroll Gardens ensure that you stay on the Interstate 278, or the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Pass Williamsburg and Green Point and continue onto Grand Central Parkway. Follow the signs to the airport terminal buildings or parking areas.
The main road leading towards LaGuardia Airport from areas on Long Island is the Interstate 495, and motorists coming from further north (Norwalk or Stamford), will drive on the Interstate 95 in a southerly direction to reach New York City. NYC is reached from Philadelphia on the Interstate 95 as well. Two roads from the west are the Interstate 78 and the Interstate 80, from areas such as Allentown and Stroudsburg.
Once at the airport there are several parking options from which to choose, and passengers will find four terminal buildings. Terminal A (Marine Air Terminal) is used by Delta Shuttle, Terminal B (Central Terminal Building) is used by American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines and American Eagle, Terminal C is the terminal used by US Airways and WestJet and Terminal D is mainly used by Delta Air Lines. All terminals have a variety of shops, restaurants and airport lounges. There are currency exchange services in the CTB and various banking services throughout the buildings as well. The airport provides Wi-Fi connections for $4.95 per hour.
Although parking options are available, passengers can also travel to LaGuardia by bus or taxi, or travel most of the way by the subway trains of the city. There is no train station on the airport grounds, but local buses connect the airport with the nearby subway stations. The New York City Buses used for airport access are the routes M60, Q33, Q47, Q48 and Q72, and the NYC Airporter is useful for transport from Grand Central Station and Penn Station. Several long-distance coach companies serve the airport as well, and many shared-ride services are available. Conventional taxis are a good way to reach the airport as well.
