Fort Lauderdale hollywood International Airport (FLL)
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (IATA: FLL, ICAO: KFLL, FAA LID: FLL) is in Broward County, Florida.
With over 700 daily flights to 135 domestic and international destinations, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has become an intercontinental gateway since the late 1990s.
Located approximately 5 kilometers southwest of downtown Fort Lauderdale and 34 kilometers north of Miami, FLL is one of three airports serving the Miami metropolitan area.
FLL is a base for Allegiant Air and JetBlue. Additionally, Spirit Airlines' corporate headquarters is nearby at Dania Beach.
The airport officially opened as Merle Fogg Field in 1929. It had two unpaved runways.
During World War II, the airport was commissioned by the United States Navy and renamed Naval Air Station (NAS) Fort Lauderdale. The runways were paved, and a control tower was built. The base was initially used for refitting civil airliners for military service before they were ferried across the Atlantic to Europe and North Africa.
NAS Fort Lauderdale later became the main training base for Naval Aviators and enlisted naval aircrewman flying the Grumman TBF and TBM Avenger for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps aboard aircraft carriers and from expeditionary airfields ashore.
The airport closed in 1946 and was transferred to county control, becoming Broward County International Airport. Commercial flights were expanded after WWII up to the 90s.
In 2000, the Fort Lauderdale airport acquired a direct flight from Africa. Eight years later, the airport has been going through extensive renovation and expansion projects.
